“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you."
Matthew 7:1
“[I]f thou marry, thou hast not sinned: and if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh” (1 Corinthians 7:28).
“There is difference between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman careth for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit; but she that is married careth for the things of the world, how she may please [her] husband” (1 Corinthians 7:34).
These citations are from the 1599 edition of the Geneva Bible--one that Shakespeare would have read.
TLDR: You can be a saint if you abstain from sex, or choose marriage and suffer the trouble of flesh.

“This, then, is how you should pray:
“ ‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation,a
but deliver us from the evil one. ’
For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins."
-Matthew 6:9–15
“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart."
-Matthew 5:27-28
On a Religious Note: The Ecstasy of Sainthood
When a divinity enters the body it's supposed to feel really good. It makes you shudder, it makes you tingle. Religious ecstasy can make you lose your concept of time, it gives you stronger mental clarity.
It's also known as "Transverberation" and it's famously depicted in "The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa," which is post-Shakespeare but still a concept he would have been familiar with. |
